Plan an Outdoor Kitchen

I was told that the only time guys like to put on apron strings is in the summer. That's right it's almost barbecue time. But these days it's not just for guys...

Outdoor entertaining is becoming an increasingly popular trend, especially in the warm and breezy year round temperatures of southern California. Dedicated space for outdoor dining has been a popular feature of landscape designs for many years. More recently, property owners are opting for outdoor cooking areas as well.

Traditional outdoor kitchens may only feature a gas or charcoal grill located near the indoor kitchen or possibly a sports bar by the pool. Modern outdoor kitchens often feature all the amenities of a kitchen inside your home and make it possible to entertain completely outdoors.

Possibilities include:

  • A sink or other source of running water.
  • Surfaces for food preparation, especially exquisite counter tops of granite or marble.
  • Refrigerators, ice makers, and similar appliances.
  • Barbecue pits, grills, and outdoor stoves for complete meal preparation.
  • Brick pizza ovens that offer Italian Mediterranean flair.

Your outdoor kitchen can be as simple or as extravagant as your space and budget allow. Regardless of the features you choose, there are several things to consider as you plan your outdoor kitchen design.
